Samsung to release its Tizen phone in 2014

A Samsung executive has warned the company’s first Tizen-powered smartphone won’t be released until 2014, putting the device’s debut several months behind the schedule indicated by Samsung earlier this year. Tizen is a new mobile operating system, jointly produced by Samsung and Intel, which is regarded by the pair as an alternative to Android.
The news of the delay comes from a report published by the Korea Herald, covering a local summit on Smart TVs, another market where Tizen will be used. Quoting the head of Samsung’s visual display division, it’s stated a Tizen TV won’t be out until after the OS makes its smartphone debut, which is now expected in 2014.
Samsung announced Tizen during Mobile World Congress in February, and promises were made the first device using the OS would come before the end of the year. It wasn’t only going to be on affordable hardware either, as these Tizen phones were said to have, “The best specifications,” conjuring up images of a Galaxy S-like Tizen phone.

Samsung profit rises 26% on smartphone boost

Samsung Electronics has reported a 26% jump in profit in the third quarter driven by strong smartphone sales and a recovery in its memory chip business.
It made a net profit of 8.24 trillion won ($7.6bn; £4.7bn) in the July-to-September quarter, up from 6.56tn won during the same period a year earlier.
Operating profit rose to a record 10.2 trillion won during the quarter.
The firm said sales of smartphones, a key driver of its growth, are expected to rise further in coming months.
Samsung's latest earnings were also boosted by its semiconductor business, which saw profit more than double to 2.1tn won, the highest in three years.
Revenues in the division rose 12% over the previous quarter to 9.74tn won.

Samsung Wins Among Likely Buyers, But Apple Not Ceding Market Share Yet

by Ted MarzilliOne of the bigger stories in the smart phone industry over the past months has been Samsung’s potential rise at Apple’s expense. When I wrote about the subject in January, brand perception data from YouGov BrandIndex showed Samsung had risen to parity with Apple in several metrics. Now a longer term look with data from YouGov InvestorView shows that, while Samsung has surpassed Apple as the brand most cited by consumers as their next purchase, Apple had not yet lost market share.During the first quarter of 2012, 25% of consumers said they owned Samsung cell phone while 17% of consumers said they owned an Apple.  Over the past year, both brands increased their market share, but have remained roughly in the same proportion. For the first quarter 2013, 29% of consumers owned a Samsung while 19% owned an Apple.

SeaMicro teams up with Intel and Samsung on energy-efficient micro servers | VentureBeat

SeaMicro teams up with Intel and Samsung on energy-efficient micro servers | VentureBeat:
SeaMicro announced a new generation of “micro servers” today that use Intel’s high-end Xeon microprocessors.
SeaMicro’s server boards
 use only a processor, memory,
and a SeaMicro custom chip.
The new Xeon-based SeaMicro SM10000-XE micro server uses half the power and a third of the space of previous servers. It can also handle heavyweight workloads for data center computing.
“This is an important step forward in servers, the mainstreaming of the micro server,” said Andrew Feldman (pictured at bottom), chief executive of SeaMicro. “This is the most energy-efficient Xeon server ever built.”
SeaMicro will use Intel Xeon processors in a “micro server” in partnership with Intel and Samsung. Previously, SeaMicro used low-cost, low-power Atom microprocessors in its micro servers.
The SeaMicro server shown today replaces 500 servers from five years ago. One rack of servers replaces 50 from five years ago, Feldman said.

Apple now No. 1 in flash memory consumption - Computerworld

Computerworld - Apple has surpassed HP and all other equipment manufacturers to become the world's largest consumer of semiconductor technology, largely because of the popularity of its mobile devices.
According to market research firm IHS iSuppli, in 2010, Apple bought $17.5 billion worth of semiconductors, an increase of 79.6% from the $9.7 billion it spent in 2009.
"Apple's surge to leadership in semiconductor spending in 2010 was driven by the overwhelming success of its wireless products, namely the iPhone and theiPad," said iSuppli analyst Wenlie Ye. "These products consume enormous quantities of NAND flash memory, which is also found in the Apple iPod. Because of this, Apple in 2010 was the world's No. 1 purchaser of NAND flash."
While Apple is also in the top five manufacturers that purchase microprocessors, it was NAND flash that propelled it into the top spot overall, Ye said. "For Apple, which right now spends 60% of its semiconductor purchasing budget on wireless products, processors take the passenger seat when compared to NAND flash. "
In 2010, HP lead the market in microprocessor purchases with $5.3 billion spent, followed by Dell with $4.2 billion and Apple with $2.5 billion.
