by Ted MarzilliOne of the bigger stories in the smart phone industry over the past months has been Samsung’s potential rise at Apple’s expense. When I wrote about the subject in January, brand perception data from YouGov BrandIndex showed Samsung had risen to parity with Apple in several metrics. Now a longer term look with data from YouGov InvestorView shows that, while Samsung has surpassed Apple as the brand most cited by consumers as their next purchase, Apple had not yet lost market share.During the first quarter of 2012, 25% of consumers said they owned Samsung cell phone while 17% of consumers said they owned an Apple. Over the past year, both brands increased their market share, but have remained roughly in the same proportion. For the first quarter 2013, 29% of consumers owned a Samsung while 19% owned an Apple.
